In 2022, Australian agriculture ministers agreed on a National Implementation Plan for the nationwide rollout of sheep and goat electronic identification (EID) tagging and tracing, which commences on 1 January 2025.
The implementation of EIDs enables more precise tracking by allowing individual animals to be traced rather than just mobs or consignments. While electronic tagging and identification of cattle has been mandatory in Australia since 2005, sheep and goats are currently identified through a visual ear tag system in all Australian jurisdictions except Victoria.
The adoption of mandatory EID for sheep and goats aims to enhance traceability practices, enabling more efficient management of disease outbreaks, food safety issues, and market access. Further EID technology is an enabler for performance monitoring via a suite of available connected solutions.
